Personal Writing My Personal Narrative - 1036 Words

Do you remember those journal entries we all had to do at school as little kids? When your teacher would pass out everyone’s notebooks and write a short prompt on the whiteboard? Most kids dreaded that part of the day, but not me. I loved to write. Even at the age of eight, in Mrs. Greenfield s second grade class, I thought it was something special. I would take the prompt into careful consideration and write my thoughts in the neatest penmanship my little hands could muster. But my favorite part was the next day when we were able to see how our teacher liked our stories. Mine journal would always be filled with words of praise and tiny smiley faces she had drawn in the margins. This left me feeling unstoppable. I had finally found†¦show more content†¦This horrified me. I can’t speak in front of three people, let alone the entire school! But my teacher, Mrs. Huff, knew that I could write. She believed in me and basically had to force me to do the class present ation. I remember my face glowing red and my hands shaking while I griped my paper too tightly, almost ripping it. I don’t remember actually saying my speech, but I do know it was a narrative I titled â€Å"The Best Birthday Ever†. I don’t know how or why, but I won the classroom portion. Mrs. Huff stood in the front of the classroom and called at my name as the one who will be representing the fourth grade class at the school-wide Tropicana Speech Contest. About a week or so later, the day finally arrived. I presented my speech, and to my astonishment, I wasn’t as scared as I thought I would be. Don’t get me wrong, I was terrified, but once I actually walked to the microphone a sense of calm washed over me. I said my speech and walked back to my seat on the stage, just glad that whole thing was over with. I didn’t place, but I was honestly just proud that I faced one of my biggest fears. The entire experience taught me that if I wanted to s hare my passion of writing, I would have to get over my fears and just do it. But as I grew older, I went through this drought of creativity. Perseverance in Mother to Son and The Negro Speaks of Rivers by Langston Hughes Essay The founding fathers constructed the Constitution with the notion that â€Å"all men were created equal.† However, many minorities still struggle for the same rights and opportunities as others. â€Å"Mother to Son† and â€Å"The Negro Speaks of Rivers† are poems written by Langston Hughes that use symbolism to exemplify the struggles of African Americans as they attempt to persevere through adversity. Hughes utilizes the stairs in â€Å"Mother to Son† and the rivers in â€Å"The Negro Speaks of Rivers† as his main modes of symbolism. In â€Å"Mother to Son,† Hughes uses a worn staircase as an extended metaphor to parallel its flaws to the struggles of African Americans. The poem begins with a mother speaking to her son about the pressures of reality and telling him not to succumb. She tells her son, â€Å"Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair,† (Mother to Son â€Å"MS† line 2) to portray that her life is far from perfect like the stair of a white person. She describes her life as having â€Å"tacks and splinters†¦.with boards torn up† (Hughes lines 3-5). These defects symbolize the problems in her life whether they were caused by her race or gender. Aside from the mother’s race and gender, her lack of education also plays a role in the hardships in her life. Hughes makes her limited education apparent in his use of her vernacular. Words like â€Å"ain’t† and â€Å"I’se† (MS lines 4, 9) symbolize the fact that Mother is from a Black background and she does not have sufficient education. These limitations, however, do not keep her from persevering and keeping a positive paradigm. She wants her son to realize that, though they may not have the best education or a more advantageous skin color, they must strive to overcome these hardships to reach their higher potential. In â€Å". . a staircase that goes on indefinitely. In Mother’s speech, she never speaks of an end. However, she continues to explain that through her climbing, she has seen torn boards and barren floors. This parallels the idea in â€Å"The Negro Speaks of Rivers† that Blacks will reach snags in their progress, but they must work past the snags in order to survive as well as flourish. Through the exemplary use of symbolism, Langston Hughes produced two poems that spoke to a singular idea: Black people have prevailed through trials and tribulations to carry on their legacy as a persevering people. From rivers to stairs, Hughes use of extended metaphor emphasizes the feeling of motion which epitomizes the determination of the people. Overall, the driving feeling of the poems coupled with their strong imagery produce two different works that solidify and validate one main idea.
